A tale for the time being meaning5/20/2023 ![]() ![]() The journal belongs to Nao Yasutani, a Japanese schoolgirl who struggles with suicidal ideation in response to her similarly minded father and the acute bullying she faces from her classmates.Īs Ruth staggers her reading so that she can live Nao’s life in accordance to time, she scours the internet for any sort of indication that Nao existed at all, that the journal is not simply a hallucination, a tear in the many universes. Slightly autobiographical, the book follows Ruth, an author facing some intense writer’s block that extends when she discovers a journal washed up on her beach somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. With star-studded reviews from publications like t he New York Times and authors like Barbara Kingsolver, “A Tale for the Time Being” holds so much potential - potential it does not fulfill. Personally, I think it is very clear why “ A Tale for the Time Being ” by Ruth Ozeki did not win the Booker Prize. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() However, as an archaeologist, I think the book would have been even better had he begun with the archaeology and then added in the history as an added extra. In this I am being unfair: the author knows his archaeology, has directed excavations in Carthage and Rome, and most of the archaeology is there in the book. Was this perhaps foisted on him by his publishers? My second complaint is that the book is not archaeological enough. I have two criticisms: the first is his title, echoing the slogan that Scipio hammered into the Senate at Rome. The author, Richard Miles, a Classicist at Trinity Hall Cambridge, has now written what is the standard book on the subject in the English language. It starts in Phoenicia and describes the great expansion of the Phoenicians along the north coast of Africa, the foundation of Carthage and its eventual destruction. This is an excellent account of the rise and fall of a great ancient civilisation. ![]()

The World Health Organization, the American Cancer Society, and the European Society for Medical Oncology mention in their guidelines on managing cancer pain the importance of medications (aside from analgesic treatment) such as psychotropic drugs, although they stipulate that these should be taken only for pain that may otherwise be unmanageable or difficult to control. ![]() The management of oncological pain is particularly difficult and although different recommendations exist, there is currently no clear consensus. A history of us feminisms5/19/2023 ![]() ![]() In The Book of the City of Ladies, 15th-century writer Christine de Pizan protested misogyny and the role of women in the Middle Ages. Not everyone agreed with Plato when the women of ancient Rome staged a massive protest over the Oppian Law, which restricted women’s access to gold and other goods, Roman consul Marcus Porcius Cato argued, “As soon as they begin to be your equals, they will have become your superiors!” (Despite Cato’s fears, the law was repealed.) ![]() In his classic Republic, Plato advocated that women possess “natural capacities” equal to men for governing and defending ancient Greece. It is typically separated into three waves: first wave feminism, dealing with property rights and the right to vote second wave feminism, focusing on equality and anti-discrimination, and third wave feminism, which started in the 1990s as a backlash to the second wave’s perceived privileging of white, straight women.įrom Ancient Greece to the fight for women’s suffrage to women’s marches and the #MeToo movement, the history of feminism is as long as it is fascinating.
